Evan's Day was a dream realized
Evan
O'Connor was a very special boy
who's charming smile, sense of
humor, adventurous (and
sometimes mischievous) ways and
giving nature warmed the hearts
and touched the lives of many.
To honor his memory a group of
friends and family members got
together and decided to put on a
benefit day with games, live
music and excellent food to
contribute to the memorial fund
that had been established in his
name. (For those of you in the
"older" generations think Mickey
Rooney and Judy Garland - "Hey
kids, let's put on a show!) And
so, A Bridge To Forever was
formed.
The
target date was July 9th (Evan's
13th birthday). A very
successful tag sale was held to
raise funds for both the
memorial fund and the benefit
expenses. Everything was going
smoothly. And then the
obstacles began. We couldn't
find a venue in such short
notice (3 months), we were faced
with nay-sayers, there were
licensing issues. To top it all
off we faced not one, not two,
but three(!) rained out car wash
dates. (Paramount to raising
more funding for the benefit).
The harsh reality began to sink
in that we would not be able to
pull this off by our target
date.
Then
it happened. The miracle. An
angel named Dominic Bria sent a
message through the cosmos (via
email). His was a message of
kindness and generosity. He said
that he was writing because he
had heard of our plans for the
car wash and promised to bring
his car for a cleaning. Then, in
an amazing gesture, he offered
to sponsor the entire benefit at
his restaurant, Cafe Bria. Our
prayers had been answered. Two
weeks before our target date!
Not only would we have a place
for live music, not only does
his restaurant serve excellent
food but there is an arcade in
the back room - we would have
our games! Little did he
realize that he just made Evan's
Day a reality once again!
